We are excited to announce In Studio at WNRN: Volume 8, the 2020 release from our annual in studio series . This 16-song collection captures some of our favorite in studio performances of the past year. It is not available streaming or in stores, but new and renewing members can pick up a copy on CD or digital download by making a contribution at the $10/month level or above.
Capturing a banner year for the station, this collection includes searing performances from up-and-coming artists like Devon Gilfillian, Jade Bird, and Black Pumas. There are also veterans like the Wood Brothers, Hayes Carll, and guitarist Warren Haynes, who contributed a solo version of his Jerry Garcia tribute “Patchwork Quilt” during a WNRN member event in July of 2019.
In 2020, WNRN partnered with Philadelphia’s WXPN and their nationally renowned program World Cafe to spotlight Central VA artists for a national audience. Fittingly two performances from these sessions including a previously unreleased recording of the Hackensaw Boys from Charlottesville’s Paramount Theater as well as Saw Black at Richmond’s In Your Ear studios.
Our friends at In Your Ear studios also hosted WNRN members for memorable sessions with Calexico and Iron & Wine, Seratones, and a rare solo performance by John Butler. Additional mixing, mastering, and manufacturing was also done locally by Blue Sprocket in Harrisonburg, and the album artwork was created by Richmond artists Grace Manno and Dashiell Kirk.
The spirit of these sessions can be distilled into the album closer, an incendiary performance from young blues dynamo Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. 50+ members jammed into our tiny studio (oh those were the days!) for a fish fry and live session with a young artist making an ancient music feel brand new. We listen back to these sessions to remember what we’ve lost this year and to keep our minds and what will return again. Full track list and song samples below. Order your copy by becoming a member today and we can send you an immediate digital download of the full album. Thanks as always for your support.
