Founded in 2003 to reinvigorate Harrisonburg’s downtown historic district as the cultural meeting point in town, Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance has worked to bring a greater sense of community to its downtown residents and businesses. By uplifting small business owners and encouraging economic incentivization of outdated buildings, HDR has made Harrisonburg into the welcoming community it is today.

HDR uses the Main Street Four-Point ApproachTM — a proven downtown revitalization strategy created by the National Main Street Center. They’ve led festivals and events downtown, beautified spots across town, encouraged historic preservation, and even spurred economic investment so downtown experienced more business openings than closings in 2020.
