After years playing in the local Austin Texas music scene, the Fabulous Thunderbirds finally secured a recording contract in 1979. The four original members, Lou Ann Barton, Kim Wilson, Keith Ferguson and Jimmie Vaughan were all mentored by Clifford Antone, one of the original club owners in Austin.
The band’s first four albums are now considered classic Texas blues albums but they sold poorly and their label dropped them. For their fifth album in 1986 the band went to London to record with Dave Edmunds producing. Upon arrival they found that the label with which they had negotiated a new deal had gone bankrupt, leaving them with no way to pay for their trip or recording. Fortunately it worked out, and “Tuff Enuff” became the bands’ biggest success.
The Fabulous Thunderbirds have released thirteen albums in total and the band has only vocalist and harmonica player Kim Wilson remaining from the original lineup. The band’s latest album “Strong Like That” came in 2016 and moves the band more towards soul than blues.
