Happy Birthday Kieran Kane who turns 72 today. The Americana artist has worked as a songwriter and composer, released his own solo records and also performed as part of the traditional country duo the O’Kanes as well as the more modern sounding Kane Welch Kaplan and the Dead Reckoners.

Kane comes from Queens, and by nine was playing with his older brother’s rock band. In his teens he changed his focus to bluegrass and country and by 21 had moved to Nashville, taking on jobs as a songwriter and session musician. Despite recording a pair of top 10 country songs, Kane was at odds with his record label and stopped performing only to return in 1985 with the duo the O’Kanes who released three albums.

Anxious to retain more control over his work, Kane and Kevin Welch formed their own record label and a band by the same name, Dead Reckoning. Their first record came in 1995.

Despite a string of critically acclaimed albums starting in the late 90s, Kieran Kane never achieved the commercial success the records deserved. He continued his work with Kevin Welch adding in Fats Kaplan for the Kane, Welch Kaplan album.

There have been no more solo albums from Kieran Kane since 2009 but, more recently, he has re-emerged in a duo working with guitar and fiddle player Rayna Gellert. They’ve released two albums working together and Kane is still in fine voice and writing great songs.
