Angel Olsen started performing in her native St. Louis as a teenager in the city’s coffee shops. After high school Olsen moved to Chicago where she found work in Emmett Kelly’s collective the Cairo Gang and performing with Bonnie “Prince” Billy.

She was working on her own solo material and released her first album in 2010. Next came a 2012 record that featured a sound somewhere between 50’s country and indie rock. This would be her last stripped down record as she formed a band ahead of her next record.

Angel Olsen moved from Chicago to Asheville and on her next three albums continued to expand her sound with a bigger band. The changes proved successful, as each of those albums appeared on the charts. The big sound phase culminated with last years’ “All Mirrors”. Olsen’s latest album, this year’s “Whole New Mess” revisits many of those same songs but in a stripped down form, reverting stylistically to where she started in 2010.
