On the next installment of the “Sense of Place: Berlin” series, World Cafe heads to the legendary Hansa Recording Studios. It’s a place made internationally famous by English speaking artists like David Bowie and Iggy Pop – but during the Cafe’s visit, German language indie rock band Von Wegen Lisbeth recorded a session in studio. You’ll hear them perform live in German – and be interviewed in English – on the next World Cafe.

Thursday, June 23, 2022 – Mattiel mini-concert
There’s something delightfully unique about Mattiel’s music. A pinch of garage rock, a touch of psychedelia, some galloping honky-tonk, and at the lead, Mattiel Brown’s powerful and assertive vocals. Her latest album Georgia Gothic was written by Mattiel and band member Jonah Swilley in a woodland cabin. It’s a mini-concert from Mattiel on the next World Cafe.

The unassuming dive bar is a central part of Berlin’s rock scene – and it’s where World Cafe is kicking off the new “Sense of Place: Berlin” series, with a session from up-and-coming band Shybits. That’s on the next World Cafe.

This month marks 45 years since Bob Marley released his classic album Exodus, with favorites like “Jamming” and “One Love/People Get Ready.” On the next World Cafe, Culture Corner correspondent John Morrison talks about what went into the making of the record, including the dramatic and scary events that preceded it for Marley.

Joan Jett embodies rock ‘n’ roll in every way. One might find it hard to picture her without an electric guitar. But for her latest album with the Blackhearts, she has reimagined old hits with a new acoustic sound. On the next World Cafe, she talks about why she was so reluctant to pick up an acoustic before, and what finally changed her mind.

Stevie Van Zandt stops by on the next World Cafe. His new book, Unrequited Infatuations: A Memoir, is filled with stories about touring the world with Bruce Springsteen, finding his own voice as a solo artist, and landing his unforgettable role as Silvio Dante on the HBO show The Sopranos.

A little over 25 years ago, R.E.M. released New Adventures in Hi Fi. On the next World Cafe, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe looks back on what went into that record and shares stories behind some of the gems on the new extended version the band put out last year. Plus, Stipe talks about the music he is making now, as a solo artist.

Anaïs Mitchell is a member of Bonny Light Horseman and wrote the hit musical Hadestown. She was living in New York as the pandemic approached the city. After Broadway shut down, she fled to her family’s farm in Vermont. On the next World Cafe, Anaïs Mitchell tells stories about how those experiences shaped the songs on her new album.
