New Morning Picks, March 21, 2017

Greg Graffin, founder of Bad Religion, shows us his roots again. In 2006 Graffin released Cold as the Clay where he took us through some of the songs that he learned around the campfire. It is a excellent folk album. This March, Graffin released a new solo album, Millport, that draws from the alt country world. Since the release of Cold as the Clay, Graffin has been busy getting his PhD, putting out albums with Bad Religion, writing books, lecturing at UCLA, Cornell, and receiving an Humanitarian award from Harvard. “Shotgun” is backed by members of Social Distortion.

Tim O’Brien releases his newest, Where the River Meets the Road, March 31st. O’Brien matches his talents on bouzouki, fiddle, guitar and banjo against some of the best bluegrass/country pickers, like Stuart Duncan, Mike Bub, Viktor Krauss, Noam Pikelny and Bryan Sutton, along with help from Kathy Mattea  and Chris Stapleton on vocals. The result: magnificent music! WNRN plays O’Brien’s version of the Billy Edd Wheeler tune, “High Flying Bird.” Tim O’Brien will be at the Red Wing Roots Music Festival this July in Mt. Solon, VA.

Johnny Flynn has been straddling the worlds of film and music for a decade. Known for his films, Lotus Eaters and Song One, Flynn has also been putting out critically acclaimed albums since 2008. The newest one is Sillion. He continues the 1970s and Brit-Folk-Rock sound complementing his well-written lyrics. “In Your Pocket” features his band, Sussex Wit, along with Flynn on a variety of instruments.

Peter Mulvey  has joined the Righteous Babe family with this new album, Are You Listening. Ani DiFranco produces the album (and did the radio edit, so WNRN could play “Sebastian”). It showcases Mulvey’s songwriting, spoken word stories, along with his fine singing and playing. When you listen to the album, you will find that Mulvey’s language is a bit “spicy” but it fits the over all vibe. Are You Listening will be out April 7th. He will be at Jammin Java, in Vienna, VA, March 26th.
