Culture Connection: All American

This is the week to focus on all things American as we, as a nation, celebrate the day that we declared our independence from the rule of an English tyrant.

Get your holiday started with a party, a Salsa party. Salsa, a dance most often associated with Latin culture, originated in New York and stresses individual style. On July 3rd you can try it out at the Artful Dodger in Harrisonburg with a beginner level lesson from 9 to 10pm then dance the night away at the Salsa Dance party that goes until the bar closes.

Another great American invention is musical theatre. Musical theatre rarely gets more American than Irving Berlin’s, Annie Get Your Gun.  Luckily, The Heritage Theatre Festival is offering that very show now through July 6th at UVA’s Culbreth Theatre .  Everyone from kids to great-grandparents will love this romantic musical comedy recounting the life of Wild West sharpshooting star, Annie Oakley featuring some of the best show tunes ever created such as, There’s No Business Like Show Business, I Got the Sun in the Mornin’, and They Say That Falling in Love is Wonderful.

Of course there is nothing more American than baseball..

You can take your whole family out to the ballgame to see Richmond’s favorite boys of summer, The Flying Squirrels, clash with the Akron Aeros at the Diamond on July 4th followed by one of the regions best fireworks displays. This is a long held Richmond tradition so get your tickets early.

Peanuts and Cracker Jacks anyone?

Happy 4th!
